The photographs of Gulgong from the Holtermann Collection clearly show what the town was like at the height of the gold rush during the early 1870’s. In microscopic detail they depict the town in all its rustic glory: the diggings, the buildings and above all the people. Nothing escapes the sharp eye of Merlin’s camera.
The Holtermann photographs are part of the collection which was recently inscribed on the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
We have been fortunate to acquire the two original buildings in Mayne Street Gulgong to establish the Gulgong Holtermann Museum. These buildings, photographed in the 1870’s, form part of the wonderful Holtermann Collection. We gratefully acknowledge the NSW State Library for their assistance with regard to the access of this collection for our Museum.
These are an example of the available photographs that will be on display in the Gulgong Holtermann Museum once renovations are complete and form part of the Holtermann Collection presently housed in the NSW STATE LIBRARY.
